Mobile Devices: What is 3G?
You’ve probably seen a lot of cell phone commercials lately bragging that their phone carries “3G coverage”. I bet you none of them have told you what 3G is, though! The reason they never define 3G is because, well, it’s sort of boring. 3G stands for third Generation, meaning that it comes after two previous versions of mobile phone technology. The first generation started in the 1980’s, the second generation came about ten years later, and after another decade or so, the 3rd generation came about.
I’d describe each generation to you, but that’d take a lot of weird abbreviations like AMPS, TDMA, MHz, and GSM. If you’re interested in learning on your own, though, I’d encourage you to go to here. The information is pretty complex, but they really helped me figure all this out!
To put it the way I understand it, though, the different generations each improve on the previous generation. So, as an example, a phone using 3G would have a faster connection to the Internet and would drop your calls less often. Personally, I can’t wait for 4G to debut. Hurry up, 2015!

Mobile Devices: What is Mobility?
I was thinking about what to do for my first official faculty blog when it hit me – I should probably explain what I mean by “mobility”. When I talk about mobility, I’m talking about mobile computing. This is an EXTREMELY broad subject and can refer to things like cell phones, mobile hot spots, notebook computers, mp3 players, smart phones, and even GPS units. While all these gizmos are as helpful as they are cool, they can also be dangerous if they’re not used right.
Since these devices are all made to go wherever you go, they come with some pretty serious security problems. Think about it. That tiny device might hold a lot of personal information about you that you wouldn’t want in the wrong hands. When you’re using someone else’s Wi-Fi on your smart phone or laptop, you’re pretty much hoping that there is nothing bad lurking on that connection. Also, if it’s easy to carry, it can be easy for someone to steal.
Ok, that’s enough scaring you for one day, hehe. Mobility may have risks, but if it is used by a smart, careful user (like you), it can open up a whole new world of awesome!

Welcome to the new Blog!
Hi Everyone! My name's Carlo and I graduated last Spring from the Carnegie Cyber Academy. I spent the summer training in the field, but I really love the Academy so Commander Omni invited me back this Fall as faculty. It’s pretty weird being a faculty member now, but it’s a lot of fun, too!
You may be wondering what happened to my old blog. Well now that I'm faculty I've upgraded to a new one where I can share my new cyber defense knowledge with the Cadets. This blog will focus on cyber defense issues related to mobility, since I'm always on the go! But when I’m not blogging about mobility, I’ll still be busy at the Academy being the best “CyberPort Technician” I can be. It’s a lot of work, but I’m feeling good about it.
Anyway, I should get back to work. This CyberPort’s not going to take care of itself! Keep reading my blog for information about the gadgets and gizmos that keep you connected on the go! Oh, and if you're looking for my old blog, everything's still here in the archives, under the topic "My Training Days."
